Bring Witchy Energy Into Your Home with These Crafty Cinnamon Broom Ideas

Not only do cinnamon brooms give your home a festive aroma—they bring good energy, too.

Cinnamon brooms come back as one of the trendiest autumn decor ideas year after year, and it’s easy to see why. They fit right in with the rest of your fall decor, mums, and pumpkin candles, perfectly capturing the cozy witch aesthetic. And of course, they bring a nostalgic, sweet cinnamon smell throughout your space. They also typically come in multiple sizes and styles, fit for any space.

What Are Cinnamon Brooms?

Usually made of pine straw and scented with cinnamon oil, cinnamon brooms are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. Legend says they ward off evil spirits, making them extra fitting for Halloween time. You can hang your brooms in any room to protect your home (inside the front door is a popular spot), or sweep your porch or entryway with it to cleanse your space's energy.

How to Customize Your Cinnamon Broom

Whether you’re looking to use your cinnamon broom as witchy fall decor or increase your good luck, there are myriad ways to make it your own. Adjust its scent, color, size, and add some trinkets or decor elements to craft your perfect broom.

Change Up the Scent

The rich cinnamon smell the broom gives off can be overwhelming to some. If it's not your favorite or you prefer a lighter scent, you have a couple options.

To make your own broom fragrance, dilute any essential oil with water and use a spray bottle to spritz the mixture over the entirety of the broom. To make the aroma stronger and last longer, use less water. For a lighter scent, use more. You may need to refresh your broom every few weeks with more cinnamon oil. If you’re looking to tone down a powerful cinnamon scent, leave your broom outside for a couple days until you're satisfied with its strength.

Add on Personal Embellishments

TikTok creator @hotpinkpineapples shared how she turned a broken tree branch into a sold-out, Pottery Barn lookalike (complete with mini fairy lights and a thick wooden handle) in a video that's gained over 136,000 views. With these minor tweaks, she transformed a traditional cinnamon broom transformed into a more rustic, sturdy, and affordable decoration.

"Honestly I like yours better because of the natural wooden branch versus such a straight pole," one user commented.

To further spruce up your broom, sprinkle on some glitter, replace the neutral twine with colorful twine, attach mini ornaments or objects with glue, and paint sections of the broom gold or silver. All of these elements make your broom a standout, crafty seasonal decor piece—but who’s to say it still can't ward off evil spirits, too?

DIY from Start to Finish

Making your broom from scratch allows you to customize its size and shape to best fit your space—plus, you can fully concoct your own scent.

In a TikTok, creator @naturallymodernwitch demonstrated the entire process of creating a conventional cinnamon broom, from picking the materials to fastening it together.

"Traditionally they are made out of pine brush," she explains in her video. "But I have desert root growing in my backyard, so that's what I'm gonna use. You can use whatever you have growing in your backyard."

After tying on her twine in four different places to create the handle, she sews the top of the bristles together to ensure it doesn't fall apart. From there, you have total creative freedom—but make sure you hang it somewhere everyone (including any evil spirits) will be able to admire it.
