The IKEA food court is a classic stop for anyone who’s successfully made their way through one of the retailer’s massive showrooms—whether it’s for the fan-favorite Swedish meatballs or the hotdog that's been a staple for the past 40 years. Though IKEA introduced their first version of a veggie dog to American stores in 2018, the latest meat-free creation has officially made its way across the pond nearly a year after its European debut.
The biggest change for IKEA’s plant dog spotlights what the brand calls “the snap.” Regular hotdogs come with a casing around the exterior that creates a "snap" with each bite—this casing isn’t typically found in plant-based dogs, making the texture noticeably different.
“We have spent much time in the development process to give the best experience for our customers. With a great taste, texture, and a snap when you bite it, the plant-based hot dog is a perfect alternative to a traditional iconic hot dog,” said Helene von Reis, food manager at IKEA Sweden, in a press release.
The best part about the plant dog: the price. Much like the affordability IKEA is known for when it comes to their furniture, you can't find a better deal for a dog (rivaled only by Costco's classic $1.50 combo). It costs only 70 cents—30 cents less than their regular hotdog.
“We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact,” von Reis continued in the press release.
The retailer’s goal with the low plant-based prices is to encourage customers to opt for the meatless versions of their favorite IKEA foods, as these options tend to leave less of an ecological footprint.
IKEA’s website states that the plant dog's ingredients include rice protein, onion, apple, salt, and pepper. This gives it that smokiness that comes with traditional sausage (and the texture of a regular hotdog).
As of March 19, you can taste test a plant dog at U.S. IKEA Bistros, along with their other plant-based meal alternatives. The frozen version of their infamous veggie dogs are also available in IKEA stores only.
IKEA is also hosting a plant dog welcoming shower on April 11, during which customers can enjoy the chance to try it and even participate in celebratory games. To check which IKEA store near you is participating, you can use IKEA’s store locator.
