Like most, I’ve seen videos of Bissell’s Little Green Machine all over social media, as it satisfyingly sucks the dirt out of carpets. One day while sitting on the couch, I began to smell a musty odor and quickly pinpointed it to bathroom stains on my rug, courtesy of my high-energy Chihuahua. When a rag and spray weren’t enough—I knew it was time to give the popular cleaning tool a shot and purchased it on Amazon that day.
As Amazon’s best-selling carpet and upholstery cleaning machine, the portable stain remover gets the job done without the chunk from your wallet or closet space that larger commercial-grade steamers require. It’s light at just under 10 pounds, and I found it easy to carry from room to room, even with a full 48-ounce tank. The tank includes a fill line, so you know how much formula and water to put in for a satisfying sudsy clean.

The machine comes with an included Spot and Stain solution; however, I added the brand’s Pet Stain and Odor Formula to my order since pet stains were number one on my priority list. Not only did it completely eliminate the mess and the unpleasant odor, but it also helped with other stains, like a stubborn coffee spill that I previously was resigned to being a permanent fixture under my coffee table.
Designed to spot clean and to go over small rugs, I’ve found it helpful for quick messes. However, the first time I used the cleaner, I decided to go over the entirety of my large living room area rug since it was in desperate need of a deep clean. It was a process that took me three days, dedicating a couple of hours each day to cleaning a portion of the carpet. While time-consuming, I found it well worth it since my area rug has never been cleaner, and I was surprised (and a little horrified) to see just how much debris had built up in my low pile rug.
It’s convenient to have both the sprayer and suction on the hose tool as it makes it easy to treat an area and dry all in one go. But I will say, make sure to really vacuum any carpet you’re going to steam clean first. I quickly ran the vacuum over the rug, but even so, some hairs made their way into the hose tool and are now stuck in the head. While it doesn’t affect the machine’s ability to clean, I wish I had been more careful of this before my first use.
