Sherwin-Williams Named Its First-Ever Loneliest Color—And It Truly Deserves More

The most overlooked shade actually has so much potential.

We (understandably) only really celebrate trending and popular home paint colors—especially during Color of the Year season. But now, Sherwin-Williams is looking to add a new trend to their palette.

The paint brand decided to create a way to feature overlooked colors and give a nod to shades that just don’t get enough love. It officially launched a new campaign called The Loneliest Color, in collaboration with Harlem couturier Dapper Dan.

The title goes to Kingdom Gold, a deep yellow color with green undertones. It's Sherwin-Williams’s least popular color—millions of gallons of paint are sold each year across their top neutral-colored hues, but Kingdom Gold has sold under 11,000 gallons of paint since its initial launch (which was 14 years ago).

Despite those disparaging stats, Sherwin-Williams and Dapper Dan have worked to help buyers reimagine their spaces with Kingdom Gold. To add a striking statement color and refresh a room’s energy, Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing Sue Wadden recommended working with small decor accents like throw pillows or artwork.

“Incorporating gold into a color collection is about finding the right balance and harmony with existing hues, the mood, the space, the light, and the desired impact,” Wadden said in a press release. “With a unique hue like Kingdom Gold SW 6698 (137-C5), make spaces personal, and experiment with variations of complementary colors, textures, and decorative pieces."

The bold shade also works for accent walls or larger spaces that need a little extra vibrancy. It’s perfect for dopamine decor and has plenty of eye-catching complementary colors that have the power to completely transform your space.

If you want to stick to a traditional aesthetic, you can incorporate the color with small textile elements like blankets or pillows. Paint your wood paneling and accent spaces like wall nooks or window benches. This keeps your space looking classic and timeless while still give it a pop.

While you can't go wrong with subtle, Kingdom Gold is about more is more—vibrant, unique designs you wouldn’t think of right away. Sherwin-Williams also wants you to experiment with how the shade looks when it’s used in the most daring spaces of the home, whether you opt to upgrade your kitchen cabinets and dining seating, transform your front door, or add a serious statement wardrobe to your bedroom.

To help breathe even more new life into Kingdom Gold, Dapper Dan worked with Sherwin-Williams to create his own clothing designs inspired by The Loneliest Color: The gold hue will be featured in a new wearable art collection in partnership and production with Nolis Anderson and Verytaste, which is available for auction via eBay starting April 4 at 12 p.m. ET.

“I’ve always seen the impact that color has in every piece that I’ve designed. To me, color champions our creative potential and radiates joy," Dapper Dan said in a press release. "My hope is that The Loneliest Color will help people find the confidence to show the world their true colors. Be unapologetic about their style and design choices. Embrace Kingdom Gold or any color that is personal, not just popular."

Kingdom Gold is now available for purchase at Sherwin-Williams, where you can find plenty of paint samples of the unpopular (for now) color available both in-store and online.
