One of the most common reasons why people invest in sleeper sofas is to provide a comfortable sleep space for guests. And when it comes to sleep, the Joybird Briar Sleeper really delivers.
During testing, we noted that the foldout bed was “extremely comfortable” and “amazing” to sleep on. We also had guests staying with us shortly after the couch was delivered and felt confident that our friends would sleep well on the ultra-comfy queen mattress.
As for the couch, the cushions were initially on the firmer side and needed to be broken in. However, we found that they did soften with consistent use and continued to get better each day.
Comfort aside, the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa collected top scores for ease of use. Converting the couch to a bed can be done in about a minute or so. We initially found it tricky to fold the bed back up, but once we got the hang of it it only took us about 30 seconds to convert it back. Assembly was speedy, too — we observed that it took the delivery team longer to get the couch out of the box than it did to build it.
This sleeper sofa also scored high marks for durability and its impressive, high-quality materials. Our dog jumped all over it with dirty paws, but the stains came out of the upholstery easily.
If there’s one thing to keep in mind, it’s the size of the sofa compared to its overall price. The Joybird website says the Briar Sleeper Sofa can accommodate three to four people, but we thought that was a bit of a stretch.
Overall, we felt it could comfortably sit two people and that the price is a bit steep in comparison. But if you don’t need a very large seating space and are looking for a sofa bed that will be truly comfortable for guests, you can’t go wrong with this one.
How it Performed After One Year
We used this couch at home for a year and overall, we didn't notice any significant changes in quality. The cushions did soften a bit but were still firm overall. We didn't think this was a dealbreaker, but worth noting depending on your preferences.
The couch proved to be stain-resistant as well. Our dog got the couch dirty a few times and we spilled food on it here and there but the stains were easily removed.

Thanks to its big, plush cushions, the West Elm Harmony Modular 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional with Storage Chaise is an incredibly comfortable couch. After using it for a few weeks, the cushions were perfectly worn in.
Ease of use is also excellent. It took us just 36 seconds to convert the couch to a bed, and less than that to fold it back up. We appreciated that it wasn’t heavy and didn’t need a ton of force to convert either.
We found the mattress to be sturdy-feeling and plusher than many other sofa beds we’ve slept on in the past. We could feel the metal bars underneath, however, so while the mattress is fairly comfortable, it’s probably not ideal to sleep on for more than a few days.
The seat cushions fill the gap between the sofa and the mattress, creating a soft headboard. We also appreciated the bed frame, which glides in and out with ease and produces few creaks and squeaks. We felt that it comes with more pillows than you might need.
The upholstery on this couch was also very durable. We chose the performance basketweave fabric and found that it was both velvety soft and highly stain-resistant—coffee and pen marks came out with no issues, and crumbs brushed off easily. We also noticed that the foam and filling on all the cushions are very pliable and would spring right back into shape.
This piece would be worthy of a spot on our list even if it had no other noteworthy features, but it also happens to boast excellent storage under the sectional, accessed simply by lifting a tap on the cushion. We felt like it was a large enough space to store extra blankets and pillows for the bed.
Our main complaint concerned West Elm’s white-glove delivery service, which is an additional cost and resulted in several frustrating issues that initially left us with a broken couch. We were able to fix the couch ourselves but were left wary of the service.
How it Performed After One Year
This couch was still comfortable to use after one year of use—even overnight guests raved about how comfortable it was to sleep on. We noticed that the pillows slouched quite a bit after being used, but we were able to restore their shape after fluffing them up.
There was some wear and tear on the couch where we sat most often but overall, the couch held up well. The couch was stained a few times, but it was easy to remove them.

If you’re after a high-quality sectional that can convert to a comfortable guest bed, the Apt2B Tuxedo Two-Piece Sleeper Sectional is an excellent investment. The cushions on this sectional are firm but not too hard. We enjoyed sitting on this couch and found that it was so comfortable, we often fell asleep on it. The cushions above the pull-out mattress are slightly firmer, which makes sense since they’re on top of the metal bed frame. We noticed the bumper and chaise cushions have softened up a little bit over time.
Converting the couch to a bed is a quick and easy process, and took us just two minutes. There are small tags attached to the mattress frame to instruct you, however, in case you need any assistance.
As with many sectional sleeper sofas, you do have to be careful when making the bed as you’ll want to watch how you step around the mattress, which is very close to the chaise. We found that it’s easy to stub your toe on the metal frame if you’re not paying attention. The metal frame, however, glides nicely in and out of the couch without any creaking or metal-on-metal scraping noises, which is a nice plus.
The mattress on this sectional is made of memory foam and is so soft and plush that we didn’t feel the metal frame underneath. It’s worth noting that if you’re on the taller side (5’11 and up), you may find that this couch isn’t the most comfortable option-we found ourselves sleeping diagonally to avoid our feet from hanging off the edge.
Overall, we were impressed by the overall quality of the Tuxedo sectional, and that it has held up well to rough, everyday use by two young boys and two cats. The upholstery —we chose performance woven in slate—is easy to keep clean as well. It was easy to rub our hand in a circular motion to ball up the cat hair and remove it from the couch, so we didn’t have to break out our lint roller.
Although the retailer’s white glove delivery was excellent and thorough (the couch pieces arrived well-protected and were quickly set up upon arrival), we experienced a very long and frustrating wait time for the couch itself. Shipment and the delivery date were delayed five times after we placed the initial order, so keep that in mind depending on your needs.
At nearly $6,000, this is one of the more expensive sleeper sofas on our list. But given its larger size and the fact that it’s a sleeper, we felt that it was overall a good value.
How it Performed After One Year
We were impressed at how well this couch held up after a year of use. The joint mechanisms still worked well and we didn't experience any difficulties opening and closing the mattress.
Overall, the couch was broken in but didn't lose its shape. We often needed to fluff up the back cushions where our kids would play, but such was the case when we first received the couch as well. The two places that we sat in most often were softer than the rest of the couch, but we thought this was typical for any couch and didn't think it was a dealbreaker.
This couch was comfortable to use as well. We had a 6'5" guest sleep on it and they noted it was the most comfortable sleeper sofa they had ever slept on.
We were also pleased with the quality of the fabric. Our cats scratched at it a few times, but there weren't any noticeable signs of it on the cushions.
