The Rise of Puffy Decor How Maximalism Is Embracing Fluffy and Fun Designs

From plates to chunky sofas, puffed-up pieces are taking over interiors.

Decor has literally puffed up—and it's the latest trend in the maximalist design obsession.

Chunky design taking off isn't isn't too much of a surprise when you consider the rise of all things curvy and round: Where you could once only expect to see sharp angles and squared-off edges, as in countertops and contemporary architecture, rounded corners have grown increasingly popular. Designers predicted curvy kitchens would be at the top of wish lists in 2024, and influencers, including Sofia Richie-Grainge and Nara Smith, have gone viral for their stylish decor and dish choices—perhaps not even realizing how on-trend they are.

Smith, a TikTok sensation with nearly 5 million followers, recently shared a video of her late-night popcorn and marshmallow snack. While the treat looked delicious, it was the chunky, puffed-up dish she used (which has made multiple appearances on her profile) that unexpectedly captured the attention of fans.

“It’s the bowl that I love the most about these videos,” one commenter wrote. The simple, white plate with an exaggerated, puffy edge was quickly identified as a Gustaf Westman design, and it sold out shortly after Smith posted her video. Fortunately, you can find plenty other options to emulate the style with the same chunky design, including candleholders and an adorable cup and saucer.

"Unlike delicate porcelain or fine china, chunky dinnerware exudes a sense of presence," designer Nina Lichtenstein told Living Etc.

The chunky, puffy style doesn't just up the playfulness of a room—it's also functional and cozy, major priorities of design these days. Think of snuggling under a thick crocheted blanket or lounging on a cloud sofa. Knitted poufs are practically required in boho chic living rooms, while squiggly mirrors are a natural evolution of the spray-foam creations that went viral during the pandemic. More recently, scallops have been popping up, including in Barbie, where fun, curvy pieces dominated. Though not always as soft and cushy as some puffy designs, curves bring about the same feeling.

This year, arches are transforming doorways, windows, and even kitchen cabinets. Though arched entryways and doors are pricier than standard squared-off versions, it has an immediate vintage, customized impact. Arches bring a luxurious feel to even the simplest architectural style and are especially popular in Spanish and Mediterranean homes.

A chunky piece, even if it's just a simple bowl, evokes fluidity and harmony in a space. Incorporating a these elements, like a comfy swivel chair, a tufted outdoor couch, or an iconic Nelson Marshmallow sofa to a space quickly softens everything around it. Whether subtle or bold, puffed-up furnishings are bold and inviting, all at the same time.
